It has been close to 20 years since I spent the year in Freiburg, Germany studying at the Albert-Ludwigs Universität. The experience changed my life in so many ways, but perhaps most significantly it laid the groundwork – cobblestone by cobblestone – for my career as scholar and teacher of German Studies.
This yearlong study abroad program – Academic Year in Freiburg – has been around for over 50 years. It is organized by the University of Wisconsin, University of Michigan, University of Iowa, and Michigan State University, but it is open to all students from American institutions – please encourage your students to apply!
After this recent visit to Freiburg, I was given the opportunity to reflect further on my experiences living abroad and of “culture shock” and “reverse culture shock”, when I was interviewed for “The Undercurrent”, MSU’s student radio (Impact 89 fm).
